Osteoporotic fractures account for one-third of all fractures in elderly people. These fractures have a substantial impact on the morbidity and mortality of this elderly population. More than 20 years ago, investigators demonstrated that calcium and vitamin D were essential for bone formation and that, in the absence of these, the skeleton lost its capacity to form and maintain bone. While this reduction in bone strength is associated with increased fracture risk, this reduction in bone strength is only one of several important risk factors for fracture. Risk factors other than bone mass and strength include age, race, family history, and bone quality. Despite a relatively high fracture risk in the elderly, effective medications to prevent and treat osteoporotic fractures are not widely used. Although many treatments are available, none has been demonstrated to prevent fractures in the elderly. Alendronate is the only agent that has been demonstrated to reduce the risk of fracture in the elderly. It is, however, associated with considerable gastrointestinal side effects.1. Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a computer system and, more particularly, to a computer system for providing an interface to the media driver of the operating system through the operating system's I/O port. 2.
